EARLIEST KNOWN BRACHERS

See separate page for William Bracher (? - 1485)
Various online pages suggest the origin of BRACHER but they state it as a fact without justification. Furthermore I can find nothing else about the people named or even if they represent a family line! The following is a list of possible Bracher ancestors
· A French count, Brechere, who settled in England in 12th century;
· Johannes de la Breche 1220 Windsor, a knight or serjeant in the reign of Henry III or Edward I
· Peter de la Breche mentioned in Assize Rolls of Salopshire in 1221, but also associated with Salisbury;
· Adam/Andreas/Andree de la Breche 1235, 1254, 1256
· William le Brechere is recorded in Cartulary of Oseney Abbey, Oxfordshire 1245
· John de la Breche of Wiltshire and Isaak de la Breche of Oxfordshire in Hundred Rolls 1273;
· Philip de la Brach 1248-1252
· Sir Philip ate Breche 1296 of Wilts
· Adam atta Breche 1342 Wedmore and 1370 around Eneburne upon la Sterte. Wedmore was bequeathed to his daughter Crispina in his will in 1342.
· daughter of Richard Brecher in Guernsey 1401
John Bracher 1430-1432 cooper in London
Apart from the Brachers of Tisbury, the trail of BRACHER then goes cold until the mid-1500s, when there appears to be a plethora of Robert Brachers as well as Robert (Robart) Bracher of Tisbury.
- Robert Bracher was appointed vicar 7 Jan 1552 at Aveley, Essex. He was deprived of the position 24 May 1555 for marrying early(?). He was re-instated under the name “Robertus Brachar” in 1559 and seems to have died in 1566. Presumably, he is “Sir Robert Bracher” a well-known staunch Catholic, friend of Walter Clarke, who was involved in the martyrdom of Dr Taylor of Hadley, Suffolk in 1553. Is this the same person as …
- Roberrtus Bracher rector of Cardinham 12 Oct 1563. He became perpetual vicar of St Austell with St Blasey, or at least until he was replaced 9 July 1571. (Interestingly, this places him in the heart of the Arundell family’s Cornwall estate – the same family as owns Wardour Castle, Tisbury!) And then there is …
- Robert Bracher, rector of Langham, London, Essex 1571.
- Richard Brecher of Hilbisshoppes near Taunton in mid-1500s
- Richard Bracher and others sued University of Cambridge 1598. Presumably this Bracher is one of the Brachers of Cambridge and Ely who appear in records but then seem to die away.
- Finally there is John Ley alias Bracher of Blisland, Cornwall. His will is dated 1621 but before that he seems to be some kind of clerk to John Arundell of Lanherne 1587. Is he a descendant of Roberrtus Bracher rector of Cardinham, St Austell and St Blasey? Or is he a brother of Robert Bracher of Tisbury? After all the Arundells of Lanherne were an ancient Cornish family who bought Wardour Castle near Tisbury in 1544. Sadly there is no clue in his will.
